William Safire's obituary in the Economist was one of the cleverest I have read, but the Onion's obituary for J.D. Salinger is pretty awesome as well.
I like the fact that he only wrote one book... it was a G****m hit. Just makes you think that whatever it is that any of us do in life, if done well, it can sell over 50million copies... RIP old man.
"William Safire's obituary in the Economist was one of the cleverest I have read...."
Do you read a lot of obituaries? Because, honestly, that's kind of morbid. And I say that as a pathologist.
Better - in my opinion - use of phony: "She's a phony, but she's a real phony." - Breakfast at Tiffany's (The line is in both the novella and movie, if I remember correctly. The novella, by the way, is a World War II-era piece, originally published in the late 50s- 1958, I think. And JD Salinger did the phony bit in 1951? An influence on Capote? Anyway, the early sixties iconic film makes the WWII details in the novella seem a bit jarring - if you happen to read the book after you've seen the film. I'm sure you all wanted to know that on a COIN-ish blog. Carry on!)
The Onion does rock, though.
"Breast feeding an adult puts an end to the problem of the private meeting, and does not ban marriage," he ruled. "A woman at work can take off the veil or reveal her hair in front of someone whom she breastfed."

We should hold Motorboating contests in Iraq and Afghanistan to boast troop morale, share common experiences with local Muslims, but more importantly to establish Milk Kinship so we can see their women without veils--in effect, we'll become family to our Muslim friends. COIN is all about knowing their culture and sharing what we have in common.
lol.
JD Salinger was Americas grumpy old man. Kudos. You need more of them.
Fnord,
We got cities of them. No, we don't need more. For God's sake, look at SNLII in a bad mood. Or anyone of our several Bill's ....
Or me in about 25 years...
But seriously folks... not that I don't think Milk Kinship COIN isn't a great idea that needs full doctrinal study and a Breast/Brain trust full court press - I hear Richard Holbrooke is both available and a real Ace when it comes to talking about women with other cultures - how in the world of WTF did we get from Obits and the Onion to Milk Kinship?
Holy awkward segues!!
I think my comment - which I thought was quite elegant, actually - is starting to feel a little sexually harassed from some of the other comments. Is there some sort of form I can file in order to complain? Oh, I guess this would be it. Come on, behave yourselves!
Honestly, this is the weirdest comment section on the planet Blog.
*You do get that I'm joking, right? Because people don't always get that.
hey fnord,
didn't you mention that you use to motorboat your muslim nigerian, somalian and indian girlfriends? we're you considered part of their extended family after having done so?
JD Salinger use to participate in many Motorboating, as well as Milk Kinship rituals. May he rest in peace. If he was Muslim he'd be sucking on God's big titties right now, smiling down on us.
Why didn't Claude Brown in his autobiographical novel, "Manchild in the Promise Land", get as much attention? He died without as much fanfare, and his book was set in the same place, delving deeper into the subject.
You know this Milk Kinship thing isn't going away soon, right?
Because I for one won't let it, and I'm apparently not alone. You freaks.
Milk Kin is the new Ninja vs Pirate.
the Milk Kinship fatwa is the very fatwa that forced the Hi'a of the Kingdom of the Sauds to reconsider ikhtilaat.
Milk Kinship is popular even in South America. It's natural.
