The Bottom Line

This series explores the Trump administration’s 2019 defense budget request in detail. Throughout February and into March, the CNAS Defense Priorities team will post new analysis every few days on different aspects of the request. The series will start with an overview, followed by detailed analyses for each of the military departments. It will conclude with some answers to the big questions. How does the budget proposal link to the new National Defense Strategy and does it manage to fulfill the priorities set there? The strategy emphasizes strategic competition with China and Russia–is that commitment demonstrated in the budget? What trade-offs has DoD made among the size of the force, investments in advanced capabilities, and readiness?
