CNAS AI Leadership Forum

Rapid progress in artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked a global competition for leadership to develop, deploy, and govern this era-defining technology. Forecasts that AI could bestow transformative and potentially decisive military, scientific, and economic capabilities have dramatically raised the stakes for leadership in this fast-evolving technology. Across the globe, leaders in government, industry, and academia seek to harness AI’s potential while remaining clear-eyed about possible risks. In the United States, debates intensify over the appropriate emphasis on safety and security, promotion and protection, as well as the broader implications for the strategic competition with China. Although industry and policymakers alike have embraced American AI leadership as a high-level goal, the specific nature of that leadership remains vague and contested, along with the steps and strategies required to achieve it at both the domestic and international levels. The urgency of clarifying this debate continues to grow with AI’s rapid progress and diffusion.

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) AI Leadership Forum convenes diverse stakeholders from government, industry, and academia to better understand the risks and opportunities of AI and together develop solutions to secure U.S. leadership in this transformative technology.
