On February 23, 2022, the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) held a Black Veteran Author Panel in honor of Black History Month. The event was part of the Elevating Diverse Voices Initiative. The panel discussion was moderated by Daniele Anderson, the co-founder of the Black Veterans Project and a Navy veteran.
The panel featured the works of Shoshana Johnson and Christopher Paul Wolfe. Shoshana Johnson is an Army veteran who served in Iraq. She was the first Black woman POW in US military history. She is the author of I’m Still Standing: From Captive US Soldier to Free Citizen: My Journey Home, published in 2010. Christopher Paul Wolfe is an Army veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights at Columbia University. His writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Guernica, BOMB Magazine, and two anthologies. The event was hosted by Senior Fellow and Program Director Kate Kuzminski.
