Fireside Chat | Deputy U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Jung Pak on the Biden Administration’s Approach

Mar 10, 2022
5:30pm to 7:00pm ET

Watch:

On Thursday, March 10 CNAS hosted an event featuring Deputy U.S. Special Representative for North Korea, Dr. Jung Pak, and a panel of leading experts analyzing U.S. policy toward North Korea. Pyongyang began the year with a flurry of missile tests—more in January 2022 than all of 2021 combined—and shows no sign of stopping. The United States, in coordination with its allies South Korea and Japan, have condemned those tests and also offered to engage in diplomatic talks without preconditions. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has not accepted the offer, despite apparent economic hardships due to sanctions and the pandemic. Instead, he appears to be seeking additional support from China. This event will provide insights into U.S. policy toward North Korea and explore a range of options for the future drawing on a multi-year CNAS research project on the topic.

The event included a "fireside chat" with Dr. Jung Pak, Deputy U.S. Special Representative for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), and an expert panel discussion.
