On November 16, 2021, the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) held a Native American Veteran Author Panel in honor of Native American Heritage Month. The event was part of the Elevating Diverse Voices Initiative. The panel discussion was moderated by U.S. Army Colonel Kevin Brown, a member of the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut and a West Point graduate. The event was hosted by Senior Fellow and Program Director Kate Kuzminski.
The featured authors included:
- Suzanne Rancourt, a Marine Corps and Army veteran, author, and poet. She is of Abenaki/Huron descent and works as an art therapist to help those struggling with PTSD. Her published works include Billboard in the Clouds, Murmurs at the Gate, and Old Stones, New Roads.
- Vincent Schilling, an Army veteran, entrepreneur, and associate editor at Indian Country today. He is an enrolled Akwesasne Mohawk who has published several books as part of a growing Native Trailblazer Series. Vincent has a forthcoming memoir on residential schools titled Unspoken: The Systemic Effort to Cut Out the Native Tongue.
