Remarks by The Honorable Dr. Ng Eng Hen

The Center for a New American Security hosted a public, on-­the-­record speech by Dr. Ng Eng Hen, the Minister for Defence of the Republic of Singapore. Dr. Ng touched on a variety of important issues in his remarks, including his views of: the US’ presence in the Asia-­Pacific in the past, present, and future; challenges to peace and stability in the Asia-­Pacific; and how the region can continue to prosper moving forward.

Dr. Ng assumed the position of Minister of Defence in 2011, after serving as Second Minister for Defence from 2005. He was previously Minister for Manpower from 2003 to 2008, and Minister for Education from 2008 to 2011.

Dr. Ng was first elected as Member of Parliament in 2001 and subsequently re-­elected in 2006, 2011, and 2015. He was Deputy Leader of the House from 2007 and Leader from 2011 to 2015.
