On May 16, 2018, the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) hosted a discussion with then-Secretary of the Army Mark Esper about talent management and the Army's modernization strategy. The discussion, moderated by CNAS Senior Fellow and then-Deputy Director of the Defense Program Susanna V. Blume, focused on the Army's plan to increase soldier lethality and develop improved weapons and equipment. The Army published its modernization strategy and priorities on October 3, 2017, creating eight cross-functional teams to address the Army's six modernization priorities.
