CNAS hosted a panel discussion on the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and the threat it poses to the Middle East's regional stability and to U.S. national interests.  The event will focus on the implications of the rise of ISIS, and the U.S.-led coalition response for international business, the energy sector, and U.S. security, as well as the critical humanitarian considerations involved in the U.S. response.

The unexpected strength of ISIS poses hard choices for U.S. interests and values. This panel addressed:

  • What is America's strategy?  Is it working?

  • What are the implications of ISIS for U.S. security, energy, economic and political interests?

  • What are the ethical challenges of U.S. action (or inaction) to stop ISIS? 

This event is the first in our "American Leadership" series, a nonpartisan education program in New York that will examine a range of topics and facilitate a two-way exchange of ideas between New Yorkers interested in foreign policy and national security issues and the Washington-based CNAS network of policymakers and scholars. We would be honored to have you join us for the inaugural event of our New York "American Leadership" series.
