On January 25, CNAS hosted an event coinciding with the release of a report by CNAS Senior Fellow and Indo-Pacific Security Program Director Lisa Curtis, “Dealing with a Taliban-Controlled Afghanistan: Supporting the Afghan People without Legitimizing the Regime.” This landmark new report provides an overview of how events have unfolded in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power in August 2021, and provides recommendations for U.S. policy moving forward on humanitarian relief, security, diplomacy, human rights, and evacuations.
The event featured keynote remarks by U.S. congressman Mike Waltz, Representative of Florida’s 6th District, followed by a Q&A session moderated by Richard Fontaine. The second part of the program featured an expert panel discussion moderated by Ambassador Kelley Currie, adjunct senior fellow with the CNAS Indo-Pacific Security Program. The panelists included Ms. Fawzia Koofi, former deputy speaker of the Afghan parliament and member of Afghanistan’s negotiating team in Doha; Matin Bek, former chief of staff to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and member of Afghanistan’s negotiating team in Doha; and Lisa Curtis.
