One year has passed since Hamas’s devastating attack on Israel, which ignited an ongoing, destructive war that has upended the lives of Israelis and Palestinians. The region remains on the precipice of a wider conflict, as long-simmering tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have recently prompted renewed Israeli ground operations in southern Lebanon. While the Middle East remains very much on the brink, Israelis and Palestinians continue to reel from the trauma of the last 12 months. What comes next for Israel and the Palestinians? What choices to stop the violence and advance a better future lie before them?
CNAS hosted a virtual panel with Dr. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli deputy national security advisor and senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, and Hiba Qasas, founding executive director of Principles for Peace, on October 25. Jonathan Lord, senior fellow and director of the Middle East Security Program at CNAS, will moderate a conversation that will invite our speakers both to reflect on the events of the past year and focus on what challenges and opportunities lie ahead with regard to the future of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the prospects for peace.
