Virtual Panel Discussion: LGBTQ+ Veteran Author Panel

In honor of Pride Month, the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) hosted a LGBTQ + Veteran Author Panel on Thursday, June 24, 2021. The discussion featured veteran writers from various genres and life experiences. The event was hosted by Kate Kuzminski, Senior Fellow and Program Director.
Introductory remarks were made by Eric Fanning, the 22nd Secretary of the Army, appointed by President Obama on May 18, 2016. He is the first person to have held senior Presidential appointments in all three military departments.
The panelists included:
- Drew Pham, an Army veteran, a curator for Poetic Theater Productions in New York City, and an Adjunct English Lecturer at CUNY Brooklyn College. Drew writes both fiction and nonfiction pieces and has published in Time Magazine, The War Horse, and Foreign Policy, among others.
- Emily Miller, an Army veteran, social entrepreneur, and LGBTQ advocate. As an author for The War Horse, Emily published the article "Gay Veteran Sees Racism as a Tougher Fight." Emily was a CNAS 2019 Next Generation National Security Fellow.
- Brynn Tannehill, a Navy veteran and transgender advocate currently working as a senior analyst at a defense think-tank. She is the author of two books on LGBT civil rights and policy and has written for OutServe magazine, Huffington Post, and The New Civil Rights Movement as a blogger and featured columnist.
The discussion was moderated by Richard Brookshire, a storyteller, writer, and filmmaker. Richard is an Army Veteran, Co-founder and Executive Director of The Black Veterans Project, and a graduate of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs.
