On October 15, 2020, the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) hosted a virtual panel discussion on how veteran-serving nonprofits are pivoting in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was held as a CNAS webinar.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and related public health measures have forced many nonprofits to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. Organizations must prioritize safety in designing and implementing support programs given the susceptibility of the veteran population due to age or health conditions. They must also consider increased need among veterans due to the high unemployment rates and subsequent financial stressors, reduced opportunities for in-person social support, and increased demand for mental health services.
This panel focused on the changes undertaken by veteran-serving nonprofits; including but not limited to programming, participation, lessons learned, and changes relevant to the future of veteran support post-pandemic. This event was be moderated by Rajeev Ramchand, Senior Behavioral Scientist at the RAND Corporation and hosted by CNAS Senior Fellow and MVS Program Director Kayla Williams.
Panelists represented organizations that support and empower veterans and caregivers in diverse ways:
- Tracy Farrell, VP of Engagement and Physical Health and Wellness, Wounded Warrior Project (WWP)
- Renee Foster, Women Veterans Leadership Program Advisor, The Mission Continues
- Brian Jenkins, Executive Director, Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP)
- Jennifer Mackinday, Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow Alumni
