Captain Joe McCarthy is a Military Assistant in the immediate office of the Secretary of Defense as part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the Department of the Army Staff Internship Program. Prior to this assignment, he served on the personal staff of Senator George LeMieux, member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, while studying Public Policy at Georgetown University.
Joe was commissioned in October 2002 from the Army’s Office Candidate School. His most recent operational assignment was as an Assault Helicopter Company Commander with the 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan. Additionally, during his first deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2004, Joe served as an Infantry Rifle Platoon Leader in Regional Command-South, Afghanistan.
He holds a Masters in Public Policy Management from Georgetown University and undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Criminology from Rutgers University.
