Research Areas
Kate Johnston is an associate fellow with the Transatlantic Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS).
Immediately prior to joining CNAS, Johnston worked as a research associate for Princeton’s Innovations for Successful Societies—leading research on post-hurricane reconstruction in Puerto Rico. She graduated in 2023 from Princeton’s MPP program, following 10 years as a British diplomat. Johnston has served overseas in Turkey (responding to the Syrian civil war) and South Sudan, and worked in London on the Middle East and North Africa, as well as sanctions policy. Johnston previously worked at the UK Department for Education and Department for International Development.
Johnston holds a BA in modern history and politics from Oxford University and an MA in conflict, security, and development from Kings College, London.
