National Security Correspondent, U.S. News and World Report

Paul D. Shinkman is the national security correspondent at U.S. News and World Report, where he is responsible for all coverage related to defense, international conflict and foreign affairs. His work is a combination of spot news and long form features, and he regularly appears on broadcast outlets to provide analysis on national security issues.

He has reported from Afghanistan, where he embedded with a series of Army and Air Force units, and from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he covered the ongoing trials of al Qaeda leader Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four alleged co-conspirators. He corresponds regularly from military installations throughout the U.S., including the Pentagon.

Mr. Shinkman previously was a print, broadcast and social media journalist at WTOP News Radio, a CBS affiliate and as a freelance reporter. He began his journalism career at theWashington Examiner.

As the son of a U.S. Foreign Service public diplomacy officer, Mr. Shinkman spent most of his upbringing abroad, including in tours in Belgrade and London. He graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2006 with a degree in political science and French, focusing on military and Islam studies. He was appointed by then-Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich to serve on the college’s Board of Trustees.
