Scott Cheney-Peters

A native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Mr. Cheney-Peters is a career Civil Servant, having previously served for seven years as an active duty Surface Warfare Officer. He reported to the staff of the Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy (Policy) in March 2024.

Mr. Cheney-Peters joined the DUSN Policy staff from the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO), where he served for six years as an international policy advisor. Additional prior Civil Service positions include as Deputy Director of the Bureau of Political Military Affairs’ Strategy Office at the Department of State, and as a decision forum analyst on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations’ programming division.

On active duty, he served aboard USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) as part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces based in Yokosuka, Japan; and, on USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), during which time he deployed to South America as part of the Partnership of the Americas exercise. As a shore tour, he served as editor of Surface Warfare magazine for the Chief of Naval Operations’ surface warfare division.

Mr. Cheney-Peters earned a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies through U.S. Naval War College, and a Bachelor of Arts in Government and English at Georgetown University, receiving his commission from the George Washington University Naval ROTC program in 2006.

Mr. Cheney-Peters is the founder of the Center for International Maritime Security and a Council on Foreign Relations Term Member. He is married with two children.
