Assistant for Counterterrorism Policy, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy
Whitney Kassel currently serves as Assistant for Counterterrorism Policy in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations, Low Intensity Conflict, and Interdependent Capabilities (ASD SO/LIC&IC) within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (OSD-Policy). Prior to joining SO/LIC&IC, Whitney was a Presidential Management Fellow in OSD-Policy, working Pakistan and Afghanistan issues in the Pentagon and, from August 2009 to April 2010, in Islamabad, Pakistan. In summer 2009, Whitney represented OSD-Policy on General Stanley McChrystal's Strategic Assessment Team in Afghanistan.
Prior to joining DoD, Whitney worked as a Research Associate at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and with the Polish-Ukrainian Cooperation Foundation in Kyiv, Ukraine. She has published articles in Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, The Baltimore Sun, and The Atlantic (Online). Whitney holds a Masters degree in International Affairs and Economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and graduated magna cum laude from Barnard College with a B.A. in Political Science.
