Allen Prepares To Be Next Afghan War Commander

When Marine Lt. Gen. John Allen replaces Army Gen. David Petraeus later this year as commander of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan, he’ll take over a complex mission that is expected to grow only more challenging in the months and years ahead.

The military’s footprint there is likely to shrink on his watch as more responsibility is thrust upon Afghan security forces, whose collective competency and trustworthiness continue to receive mixed reviews from U.S. personnel tasked with training them. He’ll have to manage a tenuous relationship with neighboring Pakistan and an Afghan government rife with corruption.
