China wedge ‘could damage US alliance’

The US election campaign could reinforce the perception growing in the Asia-Pacific region that America is in decline, posing a risk to the alliance that underpins Australia’s defence strategy.

That warning is in a report to be released today by the United States Studies Centre of the University of Sydney that identifies four possible threats to the US-Australian strategic alliance.

The report, Against Complacency, Risks and Opportunities for the Australia-US Alliance, is by Richard Fontaine, president of the Centre for a New American Security and a respected US ­national security thinker who spent several months here this year.
