Hundreds of Russians Sanctioned over Ukraine War Are Not Barred from Entering Canada

Rachel Ziemba, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security in Washington, D.C., said it’s surprising those sanctioned individuals are admissible “because it’s hard to see a circumstance where it would be in the national interest to let them in.” She noted that “many countries choose to apply these sort of asset freezes and the like in tandem.” However, given that their assets have been frozen, it’s unlikely these individuals have a “high interest in coming to Canada,” she added.

Government spokespeople did not answer questions about how many individuals sanctioned in response to the war in Ukraine are currently barred from Canada, despite being given more than a week to do so. Immigration lawyer Mario Bellissimo said that’s a clear question the government should have a “razor point answer” to immediately.
