In a U.S.-China Tech Divorce, Businesses Would Have to Pick Sides

Like a celebrity couple splitting on account of irreconcilable differences, China and the U.S. might be leaving a huge mess in their wake as they go their separate ways. The latest custody battle over technology companies has manifested in threats, rejoinders and lawsuits. What’s happening now, and what happens next, has major ramifications for any companies that depend on technologies from, or do business with, either nation.

Which of these great powers will come out ahead is anyone’s guess. The rest of this century seems likely to be an experiment to determine whether China can develop (or otherwise acquire) all it needs to maintain a modern technocratic surveillance state—not to mention expand its Chinese customer base to replace lost sales from beyond its borders.
