Obama makes first post-scandal visit to VA hospital in Phoenix

President Obama hasn’t visited a veterans hospital since last summer’s scandal over falsified records forced the resignation of his Veterans Affairs secretary, though he did come close.

He was headed to a speech in January when his motorcade raced past the Phoenix VA Medical Center, where department officials had routinely created fake waiting lists to hide the actual wait times patients faced.

Obama will be back in Phoenix on Friday, and this time he plans to stop at the hospital that became the epicenter of the nationwide crisis. “In some ways, he’s returning to the scene of the crime,” said Paul Rieckhoff, the founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
