Society understandably fears a “killer robot” scenario. Empowering technologies to make human-driven decisions creates unpredictability, raising complex ethical questions about societal risk and accountability. However, although democracies must take a deliberate approach to autonomous weapon development and use, an outright ban of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS) would only exacerbate the existing artificial intelligence (AI) “hype,” and put the United States and other like-minded nations at a strategic disadvantage globally.
