Lisa Curtis of the Centre for a New American Security said American officials would continue to view India as a “critically important strategic partner” as the “fundamentals driving closer US-India ties remain unchanged”.
The surprise election results “demonstrate the strength of the Indian democratic system and drive home the fact that shared democratic values underpin the close ties between the United States and India”, she added.

Curtis, who served as the senior director for South and Central Asia at the US National Security Council from 2017 to 2021, believed Beijing was uninterested in settling the border issue because the “lingering dispute gives China an opportunity to needle India and apply pressure on its neighbour”.
India’s “steadily rising economy and global influence is viewed as threatening to China’s interest in dominating the region”, she said.
