Will the US military intervene in China's military exercises? Experts: in a "delicate balance"

International concern is whether the situation in the Taiwan Strait may go awry and lead to a crisis, and whether the US military will intervene. Jacob Stokes, an Indo-Pacific security researcher at the Center for a New American Security, a Washington think tank, believes there is a lot of calculation involved.

Stokes worked on Biden's national security team during his tenure as vice president. In an interview with DW, Stokes said that the 1996 Taiwan Strait crisis was triggered by the visit of former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui to the United States in 1995. At that time, the United States had two aircraft carriers sailing into the Taiwan Strait, but the timing was when the crisis was about to end. "We have to look at the progress of the military exercises in the next three days, and whether China's military exercises will stop on Sunday will be an important question," he said.
