CNAS Selects Jason Bartlett as 2022 Bacevich Award Recipient

Washington, June 16, 2022 — The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is pleased to announce that Jason Bartlett has been selected as the recipient of the 2022 Bacevich Award. The award was established in June 2007 in honor and memory of 1LT Andrew J. Bacevich Jr., USA, of Walpole, MA, who died from wounds suffered during combat patrol operations as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Bacevich Award recipients are selected annually and are awarded to emerging leaders who exemplify courage, integrity, and commitment to public service.

“Jason combines a deep knowledge of and interest in foreign and economic policy matters with creativity, energy, and a dedication to public service,” said Richard Fontaine, Chief Executive Officer of CNAS. “His publications are widely read, his research projects are exemplary, and his reflections on public policy are always fresh and intriguing. He is incredibly worthy of receiving the 2022 Bacevich award."

Jason Bartlett is a Research Associate for the Energy, Economics, and Security Program at CNAS. He analyzes developments and trends in sanctions policy and evasion tactics, proliferation finance, and cyber-enabled financial crime with a regional focus on North Korea, Iran, and Venezuela. He also researches the U.S.-ROK alliance and international security issues, such as North Korean military provocations and cybercrime. Additionally, Bartlett leads research and writing for the CNAS Sanctions by the Numbers series.

1LT Bacevich, age 27, was the son of Dr. Andrew J. Bacevich—a Vietnam veteran and prominent professor of international relations at Boston University—and was with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based in Fort Hood, Texas. 1LT Bacevich was a brave, steadfast, and irrepressible leader who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. In his name, this award celebrates and commemorates the sense of duty, honor, and courage for which he is remembered.
