CNAS Welcomes Geoffrey Gertz and Adam Tong to the Energy, Economics, and Security Program  

Washington, April 23, 2024 – The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) welcomes Geoffrey Gertz and Adam Tong to its Energy, Economics, and Security Program.

“I am thrilled to welcome Geoffrey and Adam to CNAS,” said Emily Kilcrease, director of the Energy, Economics, and Security program. “Geoffrey’s wealth of experience in government, academia, and research roles, and Adam’s demonstrated excellence in research will allow our program to expand and enhance our work to develop innovative analysis and policy recommendations in a broad range of economic and security areas.”

Geoffrey Gertz is a senior fellow for the Energy, Economics, and Security program at CNAS. His research focuses on economic tools for protecting and promoting critical technologies, digital policy, data governance, and geo-economic competition.

Before joining CNAS, Gertz was director for International Economics at the White House, jointly appointed to the National Security Council and National Economic Council, where his portfolio covered emerging technology and digital policy. He also served as senior advisor at the State Department’s Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy, where he covered U.S. diplomatic engagement on digital economy regulations and cross-border data flows. Before entering government, Gertz was a fellow in the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution, a non-resident research associate at the University of Oxford Global Economic Governance Programme, and an adjunct professor at George Washington University.

Adam Tong is an associate fellow for the Energy, Economics, and Security program. His work focuses on U.S.-China economic competition, Chinese economic statecraft, and sanctions resilience.

Before joining CNAS, he worked as an analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), where he played a key role in the delivery of a multi-year research project on the Belt and Road Initiative. This included the publication of two books, multiple reports and analytical studies, and the creation of an interactive public online database tracking the evolution of Chinese-funded infrastructure and digital projects, among other geo-economic topics.
