CNAS's Ilan Goldenberg Named Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs

Washington, December 14, 2021—The Center for a New American Security congratulates Ilan Goldenberg, Senior Fellow and Director of its Middle East Security program, on his appointment as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, where he will serve as the deputy to the principal advisor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and the Secretary of Defense for U.S. defense policy toward Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

“During his time at CNAS, Ilan led the way in developing national security policies for the Middle East and beyond," said CNAS CEO Richard Fontaine. "As much as we will miss his deep knowledge and keen mind, we are thrilled by his new appointment. We look forward to the many contributions he will make to the nation's security at the Department of Defense.”

Goldenberg, who has headed CNAS's Middle East program since 2014, previously served as the Chief of Staff to the Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations at the U.S. Department of State, and as a Senior Professional Staff Member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee covering Middle East issues. He also served as a Special Advisor on the Middle East and then as the Iran Team Chief in the Office of the Under-Secretary of Defense for Policy from 2009-2012.
